Pork Industry Bailout: Obviously politicians did not learn anything from the 1930's

Through supporting perverse economic policies such as this pork industry subsidy, politicians prove that they really are as stupid as they seem.

USDA pledges $151 million for pork industry bailout
-The Wall Street Journal

"The Agriculture Department, in a bid to help the ailing pork industry, said Thursday it will buy an additional $30 million of pork in an effort to boost prices. The USDA already has pledged to purchase $121 million of pork this year for government food-assistance programs, but producers continue to struggle." (09/03/09)

Betsy,

If a politician's goal is not to produce the 'socially optimum' economic outcome for everyone but to secure their own re-election and power and prestige, are they as stupid as they seem?

Do you believe these politicians act stupidly in everyone else's interest (undefined), or intelligently in their own?

Great point Taylor!

Since we know that politicians are acting to serve their own interests, I think it is constructive, at the very least, to take advantage of every chance we have to tell them that we think they are behaving like spineless, greedy, self serving nitwits.
